first ideas for space

reading room:

• ample table space needed--many of the materials that researchers would look at require a lot of space and must be moved carefully
• variation of heights of research space--some low tables for sitting, some higher counters (almost like art tables) if one wants to stand
• need storage solutions in the room for bags, coats, etc. even though people are supposed to leave everything outside, they rarely do--perhaps there is a way to incorporate some stealthy storage (not encouraging people to bring stuff in, but still solving the problem)
• if this is the "centerpiece" for the new library, how to reflect its uniqueness? (add color, dynamism, etc? need to walk the line between celebration of the cartoon and the seriousness of the research conducted therein)

galleries/exhibit space:

• play with idea of paper as the medium. it is for almost all of the holdings in the library. (think of tezuka museum--stacks of paper)
• perhaps dedicate each gallery to a different attribute of the collection - paper, drawing styles (ink, lines), etc.
• use some ideas from pop-up books on a grander scale (attending workshop in march to learn more about how to make these books)--allow guests to interact with artwork in a different manner
• i see a wall of paper (or paperlike material)--individual sheets, layered--hanging and moveable, perhaps these could be projections of holdings in the library. one can go up to it, move others for a closer look.
